Zeevik Gottlieb, crowned the World Forging Champion in 2009, wants young Israelis to try their hand at this ancient craft.
In 2009, Israel's Zeevik Gottlieb bested close to 300 other blacksmiths when he won first place at the biennial World Forging Championship in Stia, Italy. His winning entry, made within three hours, was a sculpture of a man and a woman holding one another.
"Accidentally I entered a workshop where they forge iron. I tried it, and fell in love for the first time," the Haifa native relates. Now he runs a forging school just outside of Tel Aviv.
"This trade is old and it's about to vanish from the world. So we want new people to join us; we want a lot of young people to start working in this trade," he says.
